Ink Ride | BRAINSTORM Magazine
Avaliable for the first time in print editon (with MagCloud)
is bringing Brainstorm Magazine to a whole new platform.
I’ve been lucky enough to review two of the menswear
editorials for the latest edition – ‘Ink
Ride’ and ‘Sea Punk’.
Today I
want to show you ‘Ink Ride’
.
When I saw editorial I instantly submitted to the
masculinity of it. Bold and righteous it contains some powerful imagery backed
up by some strong styling.
This shoot was photographed by BRAINSTORM Magazines
editor-in-chief, Jonathan Wolpert. I always find it great when an editor
shows their personal talents and gets ‘stuck in’ with the shoots.
I like
Jonathan's style of art direction for this editorial.
Its strong, bold and clear
and I think his choice of the in-your-face backdrop really combines the edge to
the styling.
The images are softened through the floral
illustrations by Heway VerÇosa but not enough to be feminine. Using a rough
pencil sketch and with points and shading gives it that ‘Manly’ edge in comparison to a more softer and rounder technique.
The other thing we can’t overlook is the styling
from Ander Olveira. There is many different variations to this styling and it
captures the essence of brands like Givenchy and DSquared and for me personally these are the right components for this style of shoot.
The styling is
masculine and complimentary to the concept of the editorial and to Marcelo Leao
(Blow models).
Overall, I like this editorial. The work is
vibrant, artistic but also self-explanatory.
